Albion Rovers are a Newport club with a long connection to the local community, having been formed in 1937 by Scottish coalminers who had moved to the area. In 2023/24 they were competing in the Gwent County League First Division, continuing their place in the Welsh grassroots game. The season also produced one of the most unusual shirts you are likely to come across, making this a particularly memorable piece from the club.
The away shirt is made by Tor Sports and has a white base covered almost entirely by a repeating Subway logo pattern. The green, yellow and white branding creates a very bold look, while the full Subway name is placed across the centre of the front as the main sponsor. The Albion Rovers badge sits on the chest alongside the Tor Sports logo, while the same Subway pattern continues around the back with “Albion” incorporated into the design.
The Albion Rovers FC 2023/24 Away Shirt in Large is a brilliant example of the creativity that can appear in lower-league football. Rather than simply putting a sponsor across the front, the entire shirt is built around the Subway branding, giving it an instantly recognisable appearance. For collectors, it is an especially fun piece of Welsh football history and one of those shirts that definitely gets people talking.
